Retouching
When I retouch a portrait or beauty shot, my aim is to preserve the character and personality of my subject. I think the best retouching is always approached with a light touch and with sensitivity.
It's important to understand the difference between what a camera records, and how somebody actually looks when we meet them. As social beings, we are adept at interpreting looks and emotions - our eyes and brain are very selective in what the look at at any one moment: we look at eyes, we see smiles and all of the subtle expressions a face can convey.
Cameras on the other hand, impassively record what is put before them - and it's in their nature to render a whole face with equal clinical accuracy.
Good retouching like good makeup, should be applied with a deft hand - and only where it's really needed.

'Before' and 'After' retouching beauty photos I chose strong, directional lighting to show off the striking shape of this models face. This type of lighting tends to show up imperfections in complexion that might not normally be noticed. Rather than blur or bleach out her skin, I modify pore by pore to create what I believe is a flattering image that retains a real skin texture. |
